From Learning to Innovation: AI Challenge 2026 Concludes with Outstanding AI-Powered Solutions

Young innovators across West Africa are demonstrating that artificial intelligence can be used not only to build businesses, but also to address challenges affecting their communities.

Jointly organized by Leading Change Africa and Intro Group, the AI Challenge 2026 brought together 259 young women and men from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire for four months of training, mentorship, teamwork, and hands-on innovation.

Initially designed for 10 teams, the program received 69 team applications. In response to the strong interest, the organizers expanded the cohort to 25 teams, creating opportunities for more young innovators to develop practical AI skills and transform their ideas into solutions.

From Training to Practical Innovation

Artificial intelligence is transforming industries around the world, yet many young Africans still lack access to practical training, experienced mentors, and opportunities to apply their knowledge.

The AI Challenge was created to help bridge this gap.

Participants completed eight weeks of structured online training covering artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, problem-solving, and the practical application of AI. They also benefited from mentorship, leadership development, teamwork, and professional coaching in storytelling and project pitching.

Rather than focusing only on technical concepts, the program encouraged participants to apply what they learned to challenges affecting African businesses, institutions, and communities.

Following the learning phase, 15 teams advanced to project development. Their solutions addressed areas including small-business management, public-service delivery, local knowledge preservation, disaster preparedness, and digital transformation.

Celebrating the Winning Teams

The AI Challenge Grand Finale, held on July 2, 2026, provided participants with an opportunity to present their projects before a panel of professionals.

Following the final evaluation, three teams emerged as winners.

First Place: Team YELEN — Burkina Faso

Team YELEN earned first place with Songma, an AI-powered copilot designed to help African small and medium-sized enterprises manage inventory, automate accounting, analyze business performance, and make better-informed decisions.

Second Place: Nyeleni-dev — Mali

Nyeleni-dev secured second place with Alert’i, an intelligent multi-agent platform that transforms community knowledge into real-time flood alerts and disaster-preparedness information.

Third Place: Faso Lab — Burkina Faso

Faso Lab claimed third place with Tanga AI, an AI-powered platform designed to help small businesses digitize their operations, improve customer engagement, and accelerate growth.

Although three teams received the top awards, all participants completed the program with stronger technical knowledge, greater confidence, meaningful professional connections, and experience developing solutions to real-world challenges.

Building Africa’s Digital Future

The inaugural AI Challenge demonstrated what young innovators can accomplish when they receive access to quality learning, mentorship, and opportunities to experiment.

Building on the lessons from this first edition, Leading Change Africa and Intro Group are committed to strengthening the program, expanding partnerships, enriching the learning experience, and creating additional opportunities for emerging innovators.

Africa’s artificial intelligence future should not be shaped only by technologies created elsewhere. It must also be imagined, designed, and built by Africans responding to the realities of their communities.

The AI Challenge 2026 showed that this future has already begun.

Every application represented more than a team. It represented hope:

Hope that technology can create opportunities. Hope that innovation can solve local challenges. Hope that African youth can become creators, not just consumers, of artificial intelligence.

Learning, Building, and Improving

Throughout the challenge, participants received practical support at every stage of their journey. In addition to AI training, they developed skills in vibe coding and web development, learning how to transform ideas into functional digital solutions. The U.S.-based Fastshot team contributed technical expertise, supported the selection process, and helped participants strengthen their projects.

Teams also benefited from collaborative sessions, pitching coaching, constructive feedback, and ongoing mentorship. This mentorship continued after the Grand Finale, giving participants additional guidance to refine their solutions, address technical challenges, and explore opportunities for further development and implementation.

Celebrating Excellence

The Grand Finale, held on July 2, 2026, showcased the remarkable progress participants had made throughout the program. After careful evaluation by a panel of experienced professionals, three outstanding teams emerged as winners.

While these teams stood on the podium, every participant gained something equally valuable: practical knowledge, greater confidence, meaningful connections, and continued support to help them refine their solutions beyond the Grand Finale.

A Foundation for Africa's Future

The first edition of the AI Challenge demonstrated a powerful truth: Africa’s greatest resource is its people.

When young innovators are given access to quality learning, experienced mentors, and opportunities to experiment, they can create solutions capable of addressing some of the continent’s most pressing challenges.

The AI Challenge is only the beginning. Building on the lessons from this inaugural edition, Leading Change Africa and Intro Group are committed to expanding the program, strengthening partnerships, enriching the learning experience, and creating even greater opportunities for the next generation of innovators.
